Top World Football Club Rankings – May 2021
The world’s best football clubs ranking
#1 Bayern Munich
The defending German and European Champions sit atop the German Bundesliga standings. Bayern finished the Champions League group phase undefeated ahead of Atletico Madrid in Group A and look to repeat as European Champions.
#2 Real Madrid
The defending Spanish LaLiga Champions finished their Champions League group phase campaign in the top spot. Their victory on December 12th against local rivals Atletico Madrid was convincing enough to place them in the third spot on this list.
#3 Atletico Madrid
Currently sitting in top spot in Spain’s LaLiga, Athletico has only lost once in their domestic campaign. Since acquiring Luis Suarez from Barcelona at the start of the campaign he has improved the squad and led the team in goals. They finished behind only Bayern Munich in their Champions League group who were the only team to beat Athletico in that competition so far.
#4 Paris Saint-Germain
The defending French Ligue 1 Champions and runners-up in last season’s Champions League are one of the most star-studded teams in world football. They finished top of what appeared to be the most difficult Champions League Group, ahead of RB Leipzig and Manchester United.
#5 Manchester City
Still proving they are one of the world’s greatest football clubs, Manchester City put up 3 first-half goals against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on January 3rd. This team is packed with superstars and will be competing for the Premier League title as well as the elusive Champions league title their supporters so desperately crave. They knocked out Manchester United 2-0 in the English League Cup semi-final on January 6th.
#6 Liverpool FC
The defending English Premier League Champions are still in first place in what is probably the world’s most challenging domestic football league competition. They will be a tough team to knock off the English football pedestal. They thrashed Aston Villa 4-1 in the FA cup on January 8th. They also topped their group in the champions league this season.
#7 RB Leipzig
The Red Bull squad from Eastern Germany look to overtake Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga standings this weekend with a win over Dortmund. Their recent victory over Manchester United sees them through to the knockout stage of the Champions League where they will be tough to beat. Leipzig has not lost since November 24th when defeated by Paris Saint-Germain.
#8 Manchester United
Currently level on points at the top of the English Premier League standings with Liverpool, Manchester United are looking to extend their record of Premier League titles. Unfortunately they got beat by Paris Saint Germain and RB Leipzig in the Champions League and will have to settle for the Europa League when the competition resumes in 2021.
#9 Internazionale Milan
Inter are only one point back of AC Milan for the Serie A lead in Italy. Unfortunately for them they are out of European Football for the season, and won’t have a chance to avenge their heartbreaking loss to Sevilla in the Europa League Final that took place in August. Are on track for a return to the Champions League next season.
#10 Juventus
On December 8th when they needed a 3-0 win in Barcelona to take the top spot in their Champions league group, and then showed up and did just that, proves when it really matters Juventus can win. Juventus has won the Italian Serie A for the last 9 seasons and still has plenty of time this season to get back into top spot. A convincing 3-1 away victory over AC Milan on January 6th shows they are still the best team in Italy.
#11 FC Barcelona
Having a disappointing season by their standards Barcelona is still a world football powerhouse with Lionel Messi leading the charge. They may have to settle for third place in LaLiga after having lost four matches already.
#12 Leicester City
Currently in 4th place in the Premier League, the hope is to finish in the top 4 and bring Leicester City into the Champions league once again. Their Europa league campaign went well and they finished atop of their group.
#13 AC Milan
Holding down first place in the Italian Serie A campaign, AC Milan look to regain their place among the world football elite. Their first loss this season was in the Europa League against Lille, however they did finish ahead of them in Group H. On January 6th Juventus handed them their first loss in a Serie A fixture.
#14 Olympique Lyonnais
Having knocked out Juventus (on away goal rule) and then Manchester City in the Champions League this summer Lyon looked like they could compete with the best in the world despite not qualifying for European Football this season. They are currently sitting at the top of the table in France. A 1-0 victory over Paris Saint Germain on December 13th shows they are still capable of defeating the best in the world.
#15 Sevilla
The defending Europa League Champions qualified for the knockout round of the Champions League which starts up next month. Always near the top of LaLiga, recent victories over Villarreal and Valencia show they will be hard to knock out of Champions League contention.
#16 Tottenham Hotspur
Jose Morino’s men have only lost 3 out of 16 so far this year in the Premier league and currently sit tied in 4th place. They won their Europa League group as expected, but are hoping to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League so they can get back to playing in the Champions League next year.
#17 Everton FC
Winning 9 games out of 16 in the English Premier League is no easy feat. Currently, they sit tied in the 5th spot in the most difficult domestic league on the planet. Not good enough last year to qualify for European football, they hope to get in next year. They have some world-class attacking players in James Rodriguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin that hope to bring them there.
#18 Lille
Level on points in second place with PSG in the French Ligue 1 has them on pace to play in the Champions League next season. Lille has had some impressive results in the Europa League including a 3-0 win over AC Milan earlier in the season. On December 20th they held on for a 0-0 draw against Paris Saint Germain showing they can compete with the best.
#19 Bayer Leverkusen
They were undefeated in the German Bundesliga until Bayern beat them on December 19th and took over the top spot. Leverkusen currently in 3rd place in Germany looks to finish the season in a Champions League position. Having won their group in the Europa League they should do well in the knockout stage of that competition.
#20 Borussia Dortmund
Winning their Champions league group ahead of Lazio has them qualifying for the knockout round of the Champions League. A 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga shows they are still one of Germany’s elite clubs.
#21 Villarreal
Undefeated in the Europa League, and near the top of the table in LaLiga, Villarreal are proving once again they are a force to be reckoned with. Only Barcelona and Sevilla have defeated them in 17 matches in the LaLiga campaign this season. Looked great in a 4-0 LaLiga win over Celta Viga on January 8th.
Peter
Spot on with the assessment, but I can’t see Chelsea staying on top for long.
